Medicare is federal health insurance mainly for people age 65 and older and for some younger people with certain conditions.
What it means
Part A helps cover hospital care. Part B helps cover doctors and outpatient care. Part D covers prescription drugs. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive Medicare coverage through a private plan.
Original Medicare does not pay every cost. People may add Part D and a Medigap policy, or choose a Medicare Advantage plan instead.
A simple example
One spouse chooses Original Medicare: Part A for hospital care, Part B for doctors and outpatient care, a Part D drug plan, and a Medigap policy to help with some costs left over. The other spouse chooses a Medicare Advantage plan that bundles Medicare coverage through a private insurer.
The couple does not have to make the same choice. One spouse may value broad access to doctors; the other may prefer a lower premium and is comfortable with a plan network. Each person should compare doctors, drugs, premiums, and the most they could pay in a costly year. Medicare is individual coverage, even for a married couple.
What people often miss
Signup dates matter. Missing a window can cause a coverage gap or a late penalty.
Networks, drugs, premiums, and out-of-pocket costs can change. Recheck coverage each year.
Three questions worth asking
- When does my signup window begin?
- Which doctors and drugs must be covered?
- What could I pay in a costly health year?
