The short answer

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the median yearly wage for personal financial advisors was $105,070 in May 2025. Half earned more and half earned less. The lowest 10% earned under $50,190, while the highest 10% earned over $357,020.

What the salary number includes

Median is the middle, not the average and not a starting salary. Pay changes with experience, location, employer, clients, services, and how the advisor is paid. Some people receive a salary and bonus. Others receive commissions, a share of advisory fees, or business profit.

The BLS occupation includes people who advise on investments, taxes, insurance, mortgages, college, retirement, and estate planning. Titles at a firm do not always map neatly to one government job category.

A client fee and an advisor salary are different. A firm may collect the fee, pay staff and overhead, and then pay the advisor. Still, the way revenue is created can shape incentives, so clients should understand commissions, asset-based fees, flat fees, and bonuses.

Salary is not the same as your fee

A firm charges 1% a year on a $1 million account, or $10,000 before any separate fund costs. The individual advisor does not necessarily receive $10,000. The money may pay for the firm, technology, office, support staff, compliance, and the advisor’s compensation.

The useful client question is not, ‘What is your salary?’ It is, ‘How much will my household pay in dollars, who receives that money, and what could make you earn more from one recommendation than another?’

What pay cannot tell you

The BLS figure is national and changes with each release. It is not a quote for one job or a forecast of what a new advisor will earn.

High pay does not prove skill, and low pay does not prove honesty. Check training, registration, experience, disciplinary history, services, fees, and fit.

Three better client questions

  1. How is this advisor paid?
  2. What makes the advisor or firm earn more?
  3. What will I pay in total dollars each year?
